Capitol One Park
Tysons, VA

Review by Gary

Georgetown is a private university situated on the shores of the Potomac River in Washington DC. Prior to 2024, the Hoyas of Georgetown played at Shirley Povich Field, in Bethesda, Maryland. Now their baseball team plays their home games at Capitol One Park, located eleven miles away in the state of Virginia on the campus of the huge credit card company of the same name, in the shadow of their looming office buildings. Georgetown’s new home stadium is jammed into one of the last remaining flat spaces in the heart of densely developed Tysons, VA.

Once fans proceed through the only entrance, one of the most uninspiring facades ever seen, they can opt for the main seating area or one beyond the centerfield fence. The ballpark sports 650 seats, 300 of which are comfy fixed seats that rise steeply around home plate. More seating spots are on an aluminum fixture just past the Hoyas’ dugout along the third base line.

A slender, mesh screen shields the fans in the top three rows of the grandstand while a super tall protective screen engulfs the entire setting area, assuring that very few foul balls will be acquired during gameplay. Metal blue picnic benches and tables are scattered on the concourse along each baseline, behind the home plate area, and inexplicably, right behind the Hoyas fenced-in bullpen, for those more interested in watching pitchers and catchers warm up than observing the actual game.

Fans wishing to see the game from the outfield can venture to “The Jungle,” a raised wooden platform party deck that holds about fifty or so people. On this day, there were no foodstuffs sold in The Jungle, so peckish spectators would need to venture halfway around the field to grab some grub. Bruno’s Terrace is the lone concession stand, situated beyond the first base dugout. The menu offers a nice variety of food and drink and is named after the ballpark’s mascot, Bruno the Bear.

The main visual feature of Capitol One Park is the concrete train trestle that towers high above the first base side of the stadium. The Washington Metro’s Silver line train thunders by when approaching or leaving the station nearby, drowning out the street noise at the busy intersection just outside of the facility.

The venue is also home of the Potomac League, a collegiate summer baseball league that plays its entire season here on the all-turf field. Once you negotiate the constant traffic, challenging parking, or a circuitous train trip to see some Hoyas baseball, you will be treated to the fine facility that is Capitol One Park.

An actual black bear that roamed the nearby suburbs for a time while the ballpark was being built is memorialized by a giant bear sitting on the concourse behind the grandstand.
