Goodwin Field
Fullerton, CA
Review by Mike
Goodwin Field in Fullerton, California is the home of the 4-time National Champion Cal State Fullerton Titans of the Big West Conference. This handsome, but straightforward ballpark opened in 1992 after a generous donation from its namesake. The stadium was also home to the Fullerton Flyers of the independent Golden League from 2005 – 2010. The ballpark is located on campus and sits at the edge the university sports complex.

The design is pretty basic; a 10-15 row grandstand that wraps from left field to right field with brightly colored seats in the blue and orange colors of the university. There is no roof, but a stand of palm trees behind home plate perhaps casts a few columns of shade in the evening. Since the college baseball season runs from winter to early spring and there is virtually no chance of rain in Southern California, a roof is probably surplus to requirements.

A stout press box stands behind home plate behind the last row. A nice looking building down the right field line might house concessions or a gift shop or maybe just offices, but it looks nice and lists all College World Series appearances for the baseball team and the softball team, which plays at the stadium adjacent to the 1st base grandstand. The scoreboard in left-centerfield has a retro feel with light bulb numbers and a small display screen that perfectly matches this 90s-era facility.

Titans history is proudly displayed throughout the ballpark with the aforementioned successful seasons highlighted, as well as a Wall of Champions on one side of the press box and full display honoring past players who went on to further success. Even the external chain link fence is adorned with a 100-foot banner displaying retired numbers of players who went on to compete on the Major Leagues.
I stopped by in July, well after the end of the season and the field looked a little rough, but I’ve no question that a nice facility like this will have a D1 quality field ready to go by the next season. Goodwin Field is a very nice ballpark, making the most of an unremarkable design with color, solid upkeep and a nice celebration of the history of Cal State baseball.
