Malcolm Pitt Field
Richmond, VA

Review by Gary

Sitting on a hill overlooking Westhampton Lake on the campus of the University of Richmond in Virginia sits Malcom U. Pitt Field, home to the school’s baseball team, known as the Spiders. The “River City” Arachnids have played here since the ballpark was woven in 1975. The Spiders’ web holds about 600 fans, who can choose to view the game from three vantage points.

With much of the parking close to the right-field corner, fans can choose the convenience of a raised outfield plaza above the right-field fence which was added in 2022.  This terrace runs from the right field pole to the batter's eye in centerfield. Folks can bring their own seating and ogle the giant eight-legged Wall Crawler logo in center field. The huge spider was painted on the artificial turf when the grass field was replaced in 2015.

Those wishing to be closer to the action can hike up an embankment along the right field corner to stand near the foul line under shade trees or continue down a sidewalk path twelve feet below field level and then scale a two-story wooden staircase on either side of the press box to seating around the infield. The press box has room for both local and visiting media and separates the raised metal bleachers on either side.

Renovations to Pitt Field were completed in 2008 and then re-completed in 2015 when a new scoreboard, sound system, and press box were added, to name a few of the modifications. The press box and both dugouts are all made of the same brick in which many of the campus buildings are clad.

Richmond survived an 8th inning rally to hold off the crosstown rival VCU (Virginia Commonwealth University) Rams, 2-1. In keeping with the motto, “With great power comes great responsibility”, two-thirds of the scoring came via a powerful solo homer from each team. Malcolm Pitt Field is a great field that sits in the friendly neighborhood that these Spider-Men call home. Excelsior!
