Robinson Stadium
Texas City, TX

Review by Mike

Robinson Stadium was the home of the Bay Area Toros of the independent Continental League. The ballpark we find currently residing in a park in Texas City, Texas is a simple, sturdy structure, that is well maintained. A good-sized grandstand wraps from 1st base to 3rd base with a press box at the top behind home plate.

The seating is made up of all aluminum benches and the dugouts are not dug out, so you don’t want to be sitting in the first couple of rows down the lines. The scoreboard in right-center is very nice and boasts the logo of the local high school team, the Stingarees, a spelling I have not previously come across.

There is a very nice ticket / concession / clubhouse structure behind the grandstand making this a really nice facility for high school ball and certainly up-to-par for low-level independent or summer collegiate ball. The lack of any kind roof or awning, along with the aluminum benches hints at a little discomfort for the fans if the sun is up, deep in the heart of Texas.

Modest though Robinson Stadium may appear, this site has a good deal of baseball history. This very spot was once home to Texan Park, which opened in 1955, and hosted affiliated minor league baseball in the 1950s and for one season of Class A ball in 1977. I have not been able to find when the current structure was built, so I’m going with 1955 as the date when baseball came to this park.

Unfortunately, the stadium was locked up when I drove by, so I could only take pictures from the outside, but I’m glad I got to see this nice little stadium and it’s 70 years of baseball history. That, and the Buc-ees out by the highway made for a worthwhile diversion to the Texas coastline.
