SRP Park
North Augusta, SC
Review by Gary
Built in 2018, SRP Park is one of the gems of Minor League Baseball. Sitting right along the shores of the Savannah River in the state of South Carolina, the park is home to the Carolina League’s Augusta GreenJackets. The team website proudly boasts that “the GreenJackets welcomed 255,155 fans in its inaugural season, which was up 48% from the previous year at their old home at Lake Olmstead Stadium across the river in Augusta, GA.” Considering that this was a brand-new venue and the latter a declining stadium built in 1995, it was easy to see the uptick in interest.

SRP Park holds up to 6,000 people for baseball and is part of a larger, mixed-use amalgamation that includes a hotel, apartments, office, and retail in North Augusta’s growing downtown. There are numerous seating options, including many spots to stay in the shade all around the fully orbital ballpark. The club level runs almost down to each odd base, allowing a massive covered concourse to be navigated easily. The suites are, as of this writing, the closest to the field of any Minor League ballpark. And there are a lot of them.

One of the best viewing areas to provide a respite from sitting in direct sunlight is the double-decked TaxSlayer Terrace in right field, where one helpful ballpark employee suggested we watch the game from the top level. This veranda offers great views from two and three flights above the natural grass field below. The porch also welcomes a nice breeze that blows in from the Savannah River that flows literally right behind the stadium. The first-come, first-claimed tabletop seats on the top level of the lanai are just 318 feet from home plate, waiting for its occupants to perhaps snag a home run ball hit to the short porch.

As if this reviewer needed any more convincing to bestow a good rating, the fact that Mr. Softee ice cream, a northeast US favorite, was being sold so far south garnered at least half a hot dog to the review.
Post game fireworks were presented over the park and seen wonderfully from the fourth-floor hotel across the river in Augusta where we stayed on this exciting evening. A trip to Augusta area would not be compete without catching a game at SRP Park for some baseball by the river.

Capping off a wonderful evening at SRP Park was a most exciting finish: a 4-run bottom of the 9th that included a walk-off 2-run homer by Mason Guerra that sent the Green Jackets to a 6-5 victory over the visiting Charleston RiverDogs. The bomb was Guerra’s second of this fun evening. His first round tripper was a solo shot that crashed into the apartment building looming just over the left field wall.
