Travis Field
Bryan, TX
Review by Mike
Travis Field is the home of the Brazos Valley Bombers of the Texas Collegiate League. Since it open in 1947, this ballpark has had no less than eight names to go along with multiple minor league and collegiate tenants. Officially, the current name of this venerable ballpark is Edible Field, but I just… can’t. I won’t. I refuse. I’m going with Travis Field.

The current tenant, the Bombers, have called this great old yard home since 2007 and bear the same name as the original squad that played here in the Lone Star League back in 1947. Despite multiple renovations over the years, the stadium retains every bit of its old-school charm and character. I dropped by just after sunrise on a September morning, just in time for players to begin arriving for a morning practice.

The main grandstand is classic mid-20th century, with a full roof extended from 1st to 3rd and lovely steel pillars to keep it standing. Most of the seating is comprised of backless benches, with a couple of rows of standard stadium seating in front of the cross aisle and a single row of “premium” seating right at field field, separated from the riffraff by a low concrete wall.

There are wooden party decks down both foul lines and a pretty large uncovered grandstand down the right field line near the foul pole, but my guess is that this is overflow seating for football games. The field is turf rather than grass and the dugouts are at field level, all the result of the more recent renovations and upgrades. A nice scoreboard is out in right-center field.
Travis Field is a really nice example of a classic ballpark, well maintained by the community, updated as necessary, but staying true to its original classic design. A stand-alone concessions building resides on the concourse behind the main grandstand to provide treats for the good people of Bryan, who have been enjoying baseball in this fine ballpark for nearly 80 years.
