Tucker Field
Alexandria, VA

Review by Gary

Tucked neatly in a residential neighborhood of Arlington, Virginia, Tucker Field is one of the six fields that make up Barcroft Park, a sports venue for the locals. Since 1993, George Washington University (GWU) has played their baseball games at this location. GWU has fielded a ball team since 1891 and previously played at The Ellipse in Washington DC, where the GWU campus is, just seven miles away. Now, the players must cross the Potomac River into Arlington, VA to play their home games, not unlike their school’s namesake, who famously crossed the Delaware on Christmas night in 1776.

Tucker Field was renovated in 2011 and now features fenced-in, raised metal grandstand bleachers with three connected sections. A press box building rests atop the section directly behind home plate while the entire seating area below consists of 1,000 metal bleachers with seat backs. The entire grandstand is protected by a high screen running along the backstop.

All of Tucker Field is artificially turfed and includes concrete dugouts with matching covered bullpens close to each foul pole. On this day before George Washington’s birthday in February 2026, six-foot mounds of snow from the last storm were piled high in each pen, limiting each club to warming up just one reliever at a time.

The ballpark dimensions are mostly average, save for an odd kick-out in right center field, where the wall inexplicably juts out from 354’ to 380’ in center field. Two scoreboards flank the outfield, with one family’s earlier donation of a simple LED line score dwarfed by another family’s generous donation of a video board in left field. Both family names are prominent on each board.

On this game day, parking and admission were free and the only “concessions” available were some store-bought cookies, a box of Dunkin coffee and a bag of chips sitting unattended on a folding table. The atmosphere was more like a high school game, with most of the crowd probably being friends and family of the players.

Former Major Leaguer Sam Perlozzo’s number is one of just two retired numbers hanging on the outfield wall at Tucker Field. Perlozzo played his college ball at GWU and enjoyed an extensive career in the Majors as a player, coach, and manager. George Washington would be proud of this understated stadium and the team, who split a doubleheader with Lehigh University on this early season matchup.
