Coveleski Stadium

South Bend, IN

Review by Mike

Four Winds Field at Coveleski Stadium is the home of the South Bend Cubs of the Midwest League. During a drive from Toledo to Davenport, I took a few minutes to pull off the highway and take a look at Coveleski Stadium . Fortunately for me, the team offices are in the stadium and a very friendly woman at the front desk told me that I could wander the stadium and take pictures.

Compared to the standard minor league park of today, with luxury boxes, brick and stone facades and the like, Coveleski is pretty simple. A seat and bench grandstand surrounds the field a good way down each foul line. The concourse is above the stands so the game can be seen while standing on line. The pedestrian area is completely covered by a metal roof, with a press box and, perhaps a club behind home plate, but there are no rows of luxury boxes hovering over the main seating. The roof is mostly just a roof over the concourse and provides little cover for the seated patrons.

The ballpark is unremarkable, perhaps arriving a few years early to take advantage of the design elements that would be the hallmark of minor league ballpark design in the 1990s. However, I found it to be clean, well-kept and perfectly suitable for Class A ball.
