Goss Stadium
Corvalis, OR
Review by Mike
The field at Goss Stadium has been home to Oregon State Beavers baseball since 1907. The current stadium was built in 1999 and has also served as home to the Corvalis Knights of the summer collegiate West Coast League since 2007. The Beavers are 3-time College World Series champions in the 21st century and the Knights have won the WCL championship a whopping 10 times in their first 15 seasons. So, what I’m saying is, Goss Stadium has seen a lot of winning.
The ballpark is nestled right in the middle of the OSU campus, walking distance from, well, everything. It’s a compact little stadium, seating about 3,500, and fully committed to Beaver Orange as a color scheme. That, and the bright green of the FieldTurf, make for a visual feast of color for fans as they watch the game at very close quarters.
There are individual seats and bleachers with backrests running a long way down each line, but only a dozen or so rows deep, so when I say close quarters, I mean you’ll know if the players had garlic on their pizza at lunchtime. There is a single “luxury box” on the 1st base side, down the line a bit, perhaps for wealthy alumni and former players.
It’s a modest home for two such accomplished programs. Nothing marks the disparity of support between college baseball and football as finding a small, albiet very nice, ballpark that is home to a team that has won the National Championship three times this century, while just a couple of blocks down the road is a 35,000 seat football stadium for a team that has never won a single National Championship.
Anyway, my thanks to the baseball coach who allowed me to explore on a bright September morning. I really enjoyed Goss Stadium. It’s bright and clean and I love the location, right on campus. I’m sure the place is rocking when the Ducks come to town from just down the highway a spell in Eugene.
