Mirmow Field
Orangeburg, SC

Review by Gary

Mirmow Field was a much-anticipated ballpark to visit on Road Trip Carolinas for its vintage 1948 design and storied history. Sadly, the home of the Claflin University Panthers was locked up on the day I stopped by.

Despite its quality construction, pro baseball would only be played for two seasons at Mirmow, in 1973 and 1974, by the Dodger’s South Atlantic League affiliate. Built mainly for local amateur and high school baseball, Mirmow served briefly as the spring training home of the Binghampton Triplets of the Eastern League. A few future major leaguers played at Mirmow Field. Mookie Wilson, Herm Willingham, Nate Snell, and Bill Spiers all cut their teeth here before they hit the Bigs.

The concrete grandstand roof shades the fans sitting on the wooden benches below, which were added in 1996 as part of big upgrade for a movie to be filmed here. The forgettable third installment of the Major League franchise at least resulted in Mirmow Field getting some needed improvements, like palmetto trees at the stadium’s main entry, a new roof, and a fresh coat of paint, to name a few. Mirmow was then transformed into the spring training home of the film’s minor league ball club, the South Carolina Buzz.

Claflin University’s website states that Mirmow Field received several more improvements in 2024, including a “new scoreboard, padding on the outfield wall and dugouts, new bases, and an improved press box and sound system”. While the Claflin team went winless in the 2025 Peach Belt Conference season, they most assuredly play in one of the nicest ballparks in the league. Someday, I hope to return to catch a game.
