Regions Field is the home of the Birmingham Barons, longtime members of the Double-A Southern League. Baseball has been played in Birmingham, Alabama almost yearly since 1885. From 1910 to 1987, the Barons called venerable Rickwood Field home before leaving the city for the new Hoover Metropolitan Stadium in nearby Hoover, Alabama for 25 years.
The Barons returned to “The Magic City” in 2013 when they moved into the Regions Field in downtown Birmingham on land granted by the University of Alabama (UAB). In return for use of the land, the NCAA Division I UAB Blazers play home games on the natural grass at Regions Field, as the Barons home schedule permits.
The stadium facade is of brick and steel as an homage to Birmingham's industrial past and the field can be seen from numerous vantage points outside the ballpark fences. With seating for 8,500 fans, all bowl seating is of the individual seat-back variety. High-top tables and drink rails sit on the wide concourse which wraps 360-degrees around the playing field. The stadium offers fantastic sightlines with numerous picnic and courtyard spaces throughout the ballpark. Those wishing to enjoy the game from the outfield can recline on grass berms.
Two levels of suites above the seating bowl run further down each baseline than at most ballparks, with views of the Birmingham skyline for all those facing the outfield. On the concourse, pillars identifying each seating section are adorned with cool posters of past Baron players. Thanks to the extremely friendly gift shop employee who let me take a quick look at Regions Field from the concourse hours before gametime.
Before taking in a game at Regions Field, be sure to check out the Negro Southern League Museum located right around the corner on 16th Street South. No visit to Birmingham is complete without a visit to Rickwood Field. Fans can take a tour of the historic field just three miles away. Both the Negro League South Museum and Rickwood Field offer free admission, but I would suggest a donation of whatever you can afford to help maintain these two wonderful custodians of Birmingham and Negro League History.
