Wofford College baseball has a storied history in the Spartanburg-Greenville area of South Carolina. Unorganized baseball began at the college in 1854, and the school staged its first recorded game at the Wofford campus during the 1869-1870 season. For many years, Wofford played their games on campus at Low Field and, for eight seasons in the mid-1990s, would call nearby Duncan Park “home” until Russell King Field opened in 2004. The new ballpark is located on the site of Low Field, close to the soccer and softball fields.
The stadium is nestled into an embankment and the outfield fence is free of screens and advertisements, allowing the nice grove of trees behind the chain links to form a very pretty backdrop around the corners of each foul pole. The playing field is almost entirely sod with natural grass, save for an astroturf halo that horseshoes around the home plate area.
Both dugouts are quite spacious, with seats under cover and plenty of standing room at the fence for players and coaches to cheer their team. 1,000 fixed individual seats run from first to third base, rising above the playing surface. There is also plenty of room for fans to bring their own chairs to sit on the grassy banks down each base line. Other fans can sit at wooden picnic tables on the concourse level high on the third base side, bringing the capacity to around 2,500.
Huge loudspeakers and fluorescent lights hang from the ceiling of the grandstand roof behind home. The pitched roof is smallish but provides needed shade over some of the seats underneath, although the majority of the seats are uncovered. As the game began, the stadium announcer kindly reminded fans that the restrooms were in the nearest campus building behind the concourse. A lone food truck parked nearby was the only source of food or drink for fans in attendance.
On the field, the Terriers of the NCAA Division I Southern Conference would go rabid at the plate as they scored 13 runs on 9 hits in the second inning, eventually leading to a 20-1 run-ruled victory over Queens University. Woof. Originally called the Pioneers, the Wofford Terriers were pioneers of Greenville-Spartanburg area baseball.
