Wilson Ballpark
Wilson, NC

Review by Gary

Wilson Ballpark is home to the Single-A Wilson Warbirds of the Carolina League. The Warbirds are the rebranded and relocated team once affectionately known as the Carolina Mudcats, who played at nearby Five County Stadium in Zebulon, NC from 1991 to 2025. The Warbirds name was selected because of the region's connection to aviation history as many pilots trained in the area during World War II.

The facility was known as Wilson Stadium when it opened, but the name was already changed two weeks into the inaugural 2026 season. While many of the Wilson, NC locals were in favor of this move, many fans in the greater Zebulon area were not happy to see their Milwaukee Brewer affiliate swim away to new digs. More sadly, Wilson’s longtime summer collegiate baseball team, the Wilson Tobs (Coastal Plain League), were “asked to relocate” from historic Fleming Stadium, built in 1939, to Smithfield, NC.

Wilson Ballpark will be one of the currently popular “mixed-use” venues that offer office space, apartments, retail, townhomes, and a hotel. The new digs are in an area of Wilson that is part of a downtown revitalization project. As there are no adjacent parking lots yet, fans can park in sanctioned city lots for free and be shuttled to the ballpark blocks away. A parking deck is proposed across the street from the Warbirds’ home. The stadium has no identifying exterior façade, save for a long building that runs along the third base side that will be one of the mixed-use structures. As the name seems to be in flux, perhaps an identifying sign to hang on the building is in the works as well.

Inside the ballpark, there are 4,500 places from which to view the action, most of which are of the fixed-seat variety and none of which are shaded. Seating and standing spots surround Wilson’s Ballyard to view the play on the artificial field below from all around. Guests can traverse the wide, covered concourse to numerous concessions for the attendees who sit in main level bowl seating.

A second tier of suites is flanked by pricey bars at each end. Fans more interested in socializing than enjoying the game will enjoy the Edison-bulb lit cabana in the left field corner. With chairs, high top tables and TV screens showing the live action, this screened-in cantina sits past the grassy berm usually “reserved” for kids to roll around on its hill.

The views beyond the stadium have potential as the long-standing Whirligig Park can be seen in the distance over the left field wall. To right-center field, two vintage water towers rise high above the trees and there are industrial buildings just over the fence. Perhaps these twin water towers will be painted someday to accentuate the scenery. A repeat visit to Wilson Ballpark may be in the offing to see how the stadium has evolved since there was a generic feel to the place two weeks into its first season.
