Fluor Field
Greenville, SC

Fluor Field, Greenville, SC

Fluor Field is the latest baseball stadium to host professional baseball in Greenville, South Carolina. Opening for business in 2006, Fluor Field is by far the nicest of the facilities that Greenville teams have played in. The organization played one year at Municipal Stadium after toiling for ten years at Capital City Stadium. The Greenville Drive name derives from the area’s vast automotive history and the massive 7-million square foot Bavarian Motor Works (BMW) plant in nearby Spartanburg. (Think your BMW is made in Germany? Think again.)

Fluor Field’s attractive exterior is made of reclaimed bricks from local mills that were once abundant in the area. Fans entering the ballpark at the main entrance are greeted by a larger-than-life statue of the great “Shoeless” Joe Jackson, Greenville’s favorite son. Jackson began his pro career for the Greenville Spinners, and his home is now a museum right across the street from the ballyard.

The stadium nearly replicates the dimensions of Fenway Park, right down to the Pesky pole in the right field corner, 420’ to center field and weird outfield wall kickouts that enable the Red Sox South Atlantic League outfielders to learn how to play the caroms, should they ever make it to The Show in Boston. The Furman College Paladins also play several of their home games at Fluor Field.

Fluor Field seats 6,700 in this baseball-only stadium, with most of them on the main level and hundreds more on the second level in front of the suites. For those wanting a different perspective, the seats on the top of the left field wall, known as the “Greenville Monster” are unmatched in the minor leagues. Like its Fenway big brother, these two levels of seats with tables are perched high above the killer manual scoreboard. For an even loftier view of the game, there are private seats atop the building behind and above “The Monster” that require a non-Fluor Field ticket.

The concourse views around the park are exceptional as you can continue to watch the game whilst standing in the concession lines. Other than on the Wall, there are no seats in the outfield. The grassy berm General Admission “Family Terrace” seating area in the left field corner is more of a middle school playground, complete with an adjoining caged kiddie play paddock.

Named after a local employer, Fluor Field does a great job of paying homage to the area’s baseball heritage with posters of teams and players on pillars around the concourse. On the day of this visit, the Drive pulled off a thrilling come-from-behind victory, scoring two runs in the home eighth to defeat the Hot Rods of Bowling Green. Shoeless Joe would have been proud of the hometown boys in this magnificent ballpark.
